HURRICANE EARL
As of 5 am EDT Thursday Hurricane Earl was located about 410 miles south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina with top winds near 145 mph. Earl is a category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. Some minor fluctuations in strength are possible over the next 24 hours. Earl is moving toward the north-northwest at 18 mph. It is expected to gradually turn to the north tomorrow.
A hurricane warning is in effect for Bogue Inlet, NC northeastward to the NC/VA border, including the Pamlico and Abermarle Sounds. A hurricane watch is in effect for north of the NC/VA border to Cape Henlopen, DE and from Westport to Plymouth, MA, including Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
A tropical storm warning is in effect from Cape Fear to west of Bogue Inlet, NC and from the NC/VA border to Sandy Hook, NJ, including Delaware Bay south of Slaughter Beach and the Chesapeake Bay south of New Point Comfort and the coast of Long Island, NY from Fire Island Inlet northward and eastward to Port Jefferson Harbor.
A tropical storm watch is in effect from Sandy Hook, NJ to Woods Hole, MA including Block Island and Long Island Sound, the coast of Long Island, NY west of Fire Island Inlet and Port Jefferson Harbor, from north of Plymouth, MA to Eastport, ME and the coast of Nova Scotia from Port Maitland to Medway Harbour.
Unsettled weather associated with Earl will begin to affect eastern North Carolina by Thursday evening and will continue into early Friday. Heavy, squally rainfall, gusty winds and dangerous surf will all affect this region based on the current forecast track of Earl.
Squally showers, gusty winds and dangerous waves will start affecting the coastal areas of Virginia late Thrusday night, then Delaware, New Jersey and coastal New York Friday and coastal New England Friday evening. On Saturday Earl will move over the Canadian Maritimes provinces.
TROPICAL STORM FIONA
As of 5 am EDT Thursday Tropical Storm Fiona was located about 295 miles to the north-northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico with top winds near 50 mph. Fiona was moving toward the northwest at 28 mph. It will slow down gradually during the day and turn to the north later tonight.
A tropical storm watch has been issued for Bermuda.
Little change is strength is forecasted during the next couple of days. Residents in Bermuda should pay close attention to Fiona as it will move near the island late Friday or early Saturday bringing showers and gusty winds.
TROPICAL STORM GASTON
As of 5 am EDT Thursday Tropical Storm Gaston was located 1550 miles east of the Lesser Antilles with top winds of 40 mph. It is moving towards the west at 9 mph. Gaston may reach hurricane strength during the weekend. Although still far away and moving slowly, residents in the Eastern Caribbean islands should pay attention to the evolution of Gaston as it may threaten the area early next week.
